Welcome to the PC Paralegal!

The PC Paralegal blog and website aspires to be a comprehensive resource that promotes legal discussion and awareness.

Inspired by my love for law and technology, it has become my endeavor to provide a comprehensive legal research tool for all, particularly working paralegals and legal staff. Along the top of this site you will find taps to pages that specialize in some unique social aspect of the legal industry. On the right you will find links to independent websites pertinent to researching law.

While this site is under construction, please feel free to explore all the pages and resources we have provided so far.

Software

Regardless of the law firm you work with, you are almost guaranteed to be working with Corel WordPerfect Office or Microsoft Office. In my experience, WordPerfect is regarded by most law firms as more compatible with the various legal software programs that are used.  Whether this is true or not will reflect your personal experience and history in the legal industry. Regardless, I would strongly encourage any individual not familiar with WordPerfect to make themselves fluent with the program. Fortunate for you and I, training material is readily available for both programs online for free! Check out what tutorials Corel offers for WordPerfect and what tutorials Microsoft Office offers for Word.

Practice/Case Management Software

Given the expansion of technology to the court houses, your can be sure that every law firm will operate with some sort of case management software.  Which software is used will depend greatly on the culture of the firm.  Some firms may attempt to operate paperless, which implies some degree of faxing from the desktop, efiling with the court, scanning documents and processing them with some sort of file management systems.  Below I have listed a few common programs that might be used:
Amicus Attorney Abacus Law iManageProLaw
Needles PracticeMaster Time Matters
Clio: Matter/case management, document management, client/contact management, task scheduling, practice performance metrics, document sharing/collaboration.

Rocket Matters: Individual and firm-wide calendaring, to-do and task tracking, matter management, contact management, phone and inter-office messaging, conflict checking, document storage, reporting and performance tracking, date calculation, tagging, mail merge, on-demand data downloads, Skype integration.

Legal Files: Case/contact management, email, document assembly and management, relationship management, conflict checking, calendaring, automatic notification system for tasks and to-do's.
